Hello! Below you will find the my process and stepping stones to my rhetorical analysis essay.
The first step in writing my rhetorical analysis essay was the reading, annotating and analyzing. I needed to establish a background knowledge of Sherlock, Watson and the Victorian Era. With the stories we read in class, the Sherlock episodes as well as other rhetorical analysis pieces I got a well established foundation to explore the genre of Sherlock. To achieve one of my objective goals- to read texts closely and understand them within their rhetorical situation (and not just summarize what happens in the text or what it says or means- I went through the text multiple times and heavily analyzed and picked out the best quotes to add to my notes. I also reread and analyzed the most important and dramatic paragraphs. To read more of my notes here is a collection of notes. |

Growing Goals:
✔️ Course Objective- To read texts closely and understand them within their rhetorical situation (and not just summarize what happens in the text or what it says or means
✔️ Habits of Mind- Engagement (a sense of investment and involvement in learning) and Creativity (the ability to use novel approaches for generating, investigating, and representing ideas)

The second step to my essay was the discussion forums. In the discussion forums I found that I really liked this style of notes and analyzing. I like how you can see other people's ideas as well as get comments on your own. The comments as well as my passion for this topic helped me choose my topic on Watson. Here I found how Watson is "one of us." In the forums I found that I was able to get some of my best writing and analysis down because I found my topic to be very interesting. An objective I grew on was- understanding the importance of the process of writing (drafting, review, revision) and to participate effectively in that process and how every text grows out of and reflects its rhetorical situation. |

✔️ Habits of Mind- Metacognition (the ability to reflect on one’s own thinking as well as on the individual and cultural processes used to structure knowledge) and Creativity (the ability to use novel approaches for generating, investigating, and representing ideas)
The next step in my process is choosing my topic. Through my notes, analysis and especially the discussion forum, I decided to write on Watson's character and why he is the perfect narrator. I choose this topic because I relate to Watson a lot and I love how unaware and normal he is compared to Sherlock. Watson is an average middle class man that has been through lots of ups and downs. Watson is one of us and Doyle shows that he is the perfect narrator for Sherlock's cases. By choosing the topic of my essay I grew by- understanding how every text grows out of and reflects its rhetorical situation.

The next step, to me the most draining, was the writing of the first draft. Most of my first draft was getting all my thoughts down and in somewhat of an organized manner. I found it hard to make my essay flow and try to connect with my thesis topic. I found it difficult to create my thesis and breaking down my essay from that. My first draft lacked evidence, coherence and overall structure. But by writing this draft I was able- to understand how every text grows out of and reflects its rhetorical situation.

From Connect and personal experience, I found that receiving peer review is essential for my growth in writing. My professor and classmates gave me insightful and helpful feedback on my essay. They allowed me to see the flaws in my essay and also the things I did well. It showed me the overall areas that i needed to work on and where I did not need improvement. From these peer and professor notes I learned- the importance of the process of writing (drafting, review, revision) and to participate effectively in that process.

In my second draft I improved on adding evidence and creating a more coherent flow to my essay. I fixed a lot of the major grammar and sentence structure problems in my essay. I learned that I need to proof read my essay and read aloud my essay. I noticed that if I read it aloud I can see the problems in my essay. In my second draft I mainly used the advice from connect to improve my essay. In this step I learned- to understand the importance of the process of writing (drafting, review, revision) and to participate effectively in that process.

In the third, almost final, draft of my essay I mainly focused on my notes from Dr. Haas and from my group mate. I really narrowed down my focus to incorporating evidence into my paragraphs and trying to connect it to my thesis. I found this draft to be difficult because my notes were disorganized. It was hard to find an exact excerpt when you didn't write it down or is in a pile of notes. I found that finding evidence was difficult to incorporate into the essay. But I learned- to understand the importance of the process of writing (drafting, review, revision) and to participate effectively in that process.
